Jane, don't kill yourself over this - be involved to the extent that you <b>want</b> to be involved, or you'll drive yourself nuts. If you want to play editor, I'm fine with "writing assignments" - if you're comfortable with Carlinesque commentary, teenage horror stories and mostly-made-from-scratch recipes. :P BUT I really think the email submission of blog entries by individuals is probably the way to start out, until you find out how this site is going to grow and how much of your time it's going to consume, and how much of your time you're <i>willing</i> to spend on it.
