I love it! I went through the same angst at 50 and now that 51 is barreling down on me, I think 'what a piece of cake, that 50'. :) I think if you're continually 'checking in' with yourself to make sure you're still happy with the life song you're singing, you'll do fine. It's just when we live unconsciously for long periods that we're more likely to wake up one day and realize how much has passed us by. What a beautiful thought! I love it! I remember when I turned 30; one of my young sons said to me, "Well, at least you won't die young!" By 40 I was a grandmother, by 50 I'd earned my master's degree. Now, at 57 I face the 6-0 milestone and wonder what it will bring. Good things, I hope. I wonder why 55 isn't often mentioned as a watershed year? That's the year we become officially "senior" for many organizations and businesses. Perhaps because we get discounts and other small rewards for being that age, it isn't an issue? In return for those tokens, we must admit to being "senior." Now that should cause some angst! I don't know what my perspective would be if I were parenting teens and facing an empty nest. I find myself feeling a lot of regret that I became a mom so late in life, as well as a lot of fear about how long I'll be around for my daughter. But I don't think I'm having the usual midlife "crisis" issues that others face. I'm too immersed in mommyland - sigh. I’m at an unusual place for 50: I have a 6-yr-old. I have to go back and read it later when I have more time and can give it the attention it deserves, but for now all I can say is "well done!" This was really beautiful. But for now, thanks. I love the idea of singing my life into existence. Isn't that, really, all that we can do? I need to save this for three years when I reach that milestone. But for now, thanks.
