Aged, infirm — and destitute. Wow. Will our children and American charity be enough to fill the gap? Ellen, it’s my apocalyptic vision of those indigent seniors that keeps me awake some nights. And, while I don't expect the government to rescue my generation, I imagine sundry government entities will be compelled to "do" something (particularly in housing and healthcare) because, in pure demographic terms, there are so dang many of us and we, collectively, have so little put away for retirement. My husband and I have tried to save, of course, but we got a late start, having entered the workforce during the Reagan recession. And of course, we aren't immune to the siren songs of a consumerist culture. So I expect to continue working, full-time or part-time, until the impairments of age make it physically or mentally impossible. And then I will probably take my place in a veritable tsunami of indigent seniors. I didn’t participate in the survey but i can definitely be counted among the pessimists.
