When I was young and juicy and single, I was really hot….Yet, here I am at 57, in pretty good shape for an old broad, menopausal to be sure, and yet I almost never even think of SEX. I can’t believe it.
Midlife is a time when our focus and our energies are shifting inward, yet now we have an additional responsibility. It’s easy to lose sight of ourselves during the process of taking care of aging parents.
We are all still variously lame, divorced, pierced, tattooed, out to lunch or gone fishiing, TV license fee evaders every one. I am fast catching up with the others, a connoisseur of scrounged bonfires: I favour picnic tables.
About two months ago, while showering I found a lump on my left breast. I ran my fingers across it as I was taught to do. Yes, it is there, it’s not my imagination.
Some days it is all I can do to get through the news and the talk shows, even those with positive, grit-your-teeth, coupon-clip, saving-not-spending stories. But I’m trying to follow all the advice…
Now, this waiting for a referral feels a lot like that waiting to jump. I’ve spent months preparing…and I’m starting to worry that I’m going to forget all of it while I wait and won’t have a clue what to do when I finally bring Actual Child home!
I think not. I do have a box of matzohs in the cupboard. And I plan to buy some gefillte fish with the 1/2 coupon Maneschevitz handed out. But that will probably be the extent …
…we Americans almost universally associate “greying” with aging. Which is strange considering the fact that I know men who are completely bald by thirty, and we don’t use the word “balding” as a way of referring to states of degeneration.
It’s not an emergency, it’s not drastic or horrifying. But he’s slowing down, he’s hesitating, he’s struggling just a little as he tries to retrieve a name or a word he KNOWS he knows.
