In the UK we now have "civil partnership", which takes care of all these financial inequalities, so here the notion of "marriage" has become an emotional one on both sides -- some homosexual couples want to be able to call themselves "married" (and they can't, technically), and some heterosexual couples who reject the institution of marriage, want to know why "civil partnership" isn't open to them. And some spinster sisters who live together wonder why they can't benefit from some of the financial perks of civil partnership just because they are related (and aren't going to bed together). The moral is, it gets very complicated when the state gets involved in who is or is not having sex -- and with whom! And it has got even more complicated because the state has (as it were) got into bed with the churches to decide whether the sex (or lack of sex) is okay (= worthy of recognition = worthy of tax benefits). I say, civil partnership for any couple who chooses and get the state out of the bedroom. Thanks for this very informative post.
