Having experienced, as the song says, both sides now–oh god, I want to just create some tidy little analogy about recalling love’s illusion, and that made me forget my original point. Which had something to do with fantasy and reality–i.e., if you could order up your semi-significant other the way we order our breakfast eggs and bacon, that would be great. It really does come down to what’s worth the effort. And boundaries.

After years of kissing frogs in the vain quest to find my prince, I have to say that you are mostly right. I finally love my single life after many years of wishing for the greener grass of marriage. I can’t imagine learning to compromise. I don’t think I’d be any good at that now. Can’t imagine a person or situation that would make it worth the effort. It might be fun to have a semi-significant other. Someone to travel with now and then. I’m thinking a man who lives far enough away that to see each other would be special. But every day, or even every week? I don’t think so.
