Wednesday Writer’s Workshop: Finding your place in the blogosphere

The appeal of blogging is that it’s a democratic arena;  you can blog about any topic, any field, any subject that hooks your attention.  While it is true that the more well-known blogs tend to be grouped around a finite selection of topics–politics, food, parenthood, technology–they’re really only the tip of the proverbial iceberg.  I decided to do a little research on this topic and instead, I ended up falling down the Alice’s Rabbit hole that is Alltop.

Do you know about Alltop?  It calls itself an “online magazine rack” and it gathers in one place a bunch of blogs on a bunch of subjects.  I say bunch–even though I know only bananas come that way–because I can’t really say all or the most popular or even the most active blogs on a particular subject.  What Alltop does have, however, is a wwwwiiiiidddeee variety of subjects that they cover.  Topics are what they call them and I can’t tell you how many there are, because I got lost when I fell down that particular rabbit hole.  Suffice to say, they have lots and lots of topics–and if they don’t have the one that you’re interested in, tell them and they’ll get it.

All of which is to say that Alltop is a great place to go to figure out where you belong in the blogosphere.  Have a look at my Alltop page and feel free to read over my shoulder.

    It would be nice to see Alltop take the place of Technorati as the authority on blogs. It’s a much cleaner interface too. We think we hang out with you ;-)

      @Eight Women Dream,

      If you’re going to hang out with us, we should hang out with you. I’ll put you on our BlogRoll if that’s okay.

    I don’t have a place in the blogosphere and like the anonymity; I won’t take personal offense to any negative criticism of what I have to say. I am about to travel to the forsaken or boycotted State of Arizona in a curious state of naivete. With sights set on the Grand Canyon, I have not considered the peripheral danger that currently surfaces in the news and hope to avoid an anxious husband shortening our stay. I’ve been advised to pack heat. And considering our tenting experience it seems like a good idea. Can it really be THAT bad? Do I take on the Minuteman mentality? hmm, maybe I should find my own citizenship papers?

      @JulieWesterling,
      Another instance where your husband and I are of like minds, I’m afraid. I’m afraid to go there myself, considering all the times strangers have assumed I’m Latina. It’s not a good time for those of us who don’t look–what–Aryan?

    Oh My! Wow… fun to see what you like and so, so very tempting to stay awhile and browse. I might have to set up my own as well. It’s actually nice to type in a word and find any number of blogs to refer to! Thank you…. I think!
