One of the perks of being a writer in Sacramento (and you had to ask, right?) is the monthly meetings of Writers Who Wine. I believe I may have mentioned this “Hail, fellow, how goes it” group a time or two before. We gather at one of the growing number of watering hole/restaurants/wine bars in Sacramento (and it is a growing number) for a couple of hours of alcohol and fellowship. Now the latter may seem like a trip to the Communion rail, but that just goes to show how the way a thing looks in print may not be the way it is at all.
At last week’s Writers Who Wine, one of the leading lights of our community came up to me, glass of port in hand (she only drinks sweet stuff and we were at a wine bar), and asked in quite a worried tone: “These Wednesday Writer’s Workshops–what are they about? Am I supposed to be doing something that I’m not? Is there homework or whatever that I’m missing?” And I, glass of something red in hand, said:
“You’re not missing a thing. The Writer’s Workshops are just me talking about writing. They’re not formally organized; they’re not even planned ahead. Every once in a while, I hand out a writing prompt, but what you do with them is up to you. It’s kinda like I crack my head open to that part of my brain where decades of being a writer and teaching writing is stored and dip in. In other words, the Writer’s Workshops are about whatever is on my mind about writing that week.”
Put that way, seeing it in black and white, I realize I’m being–well–a tad self-centered. Blogging is about communication and communication is a two-way street. Why should I get to decide what these Wednesday Writer’s Workshops are about? Why don’t you get a say?
So–I’m asking for your input. Topics, questions, suggestions, rants, even querulous queries–whatever is on your mind about writing, big or small, silly or serious, spill it. You can write it in a Comment here or email me at jane(at)midlifebloggers.com
I’ll be waiting to hear your side of the conversation.
