Farm Fresh to Me

by Jane Gassner

See what was waiting for me when I got up this morning.  It was like Christmas, only this time Santa had brought a box of organic veggies and fruit instead of toys.  Actually, considering how much I like to cook–and to eat–the veggies and fruit are like toys to me.

So what to my wondering eyes did appear when I opened the carton?

What I pulled out and stowed in the fridge was not only what you see here–beets, lettuce, broccoli–but also asparagus, new Butterball potatoes, collard greens, two kinds of apples, grapefruit, and avocados.  All picked from an organic farm yesterday and delivered to me today.

I’ve ordered the once-a-month shipment from Farm Fresh To You because, really, there’s only me to feed, and leftovers are only decently left over for about a day.  So this is an experiment for me:  will I make use of all the produce? Or will some of it get junked when it’s dried up or  withered or just plain sad-looking?  As part of the experiment, I’m going to challenge myself to cook new-to-me (or created-by-me) recipes to use the produce.  And I’ve decided that, lucky you, I’ll share the experiment here.  Prepare to be over-, under- or just plain whelmed.

    What a great gift to yourself Jane. I know when I get produce from the Farmer’s Market I always use it up (compared to the stuff from Ralph’s supermarket).

    I’ll be watching to see how you do and how great your veggies all taste.

    Cheers, jj

    Fresh foods are the best, but I have to admit that I would have no clue how to prepare a collard green. Waiting to see what you come up with for that one…

    @JJ
    I tend to overbuy at the Farmer’s Market. Something about seeing all that produce makes me think I’m a farm wife cooking for the help.

    @Tracy,

    I did the collard greens yesterday and thought of you while I was in the kitchen. I’ll write up the recipe later this week.

    That sounds like a great plan, vegetables are always fun to cook with. I’m very curious to see what you come up with, especially since they are so healthy for you. I just saw the trailer for the new how to live forever fiml and they talk about a lot of things to eat and exercises to do to extend your life. The advances in modern technology today are unbelievable. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UUF8CZqKKOA
