Dishcrawl Sacramento

Something about that name gives me visions of Catholic penitents crawling on their knees up to the flower strewn altar.  Yes, I know–makes no sense to me either.  Nor does it have anything  do with Dishcrawlin’, which is a social dining experience that is popping up in American cities.   Here, read what they say about themselves:

Discover your local food neighborhood. Join us for an social dining experience through four restaurants in one night with fifty plus food lovers! Relax and meet the neighbors over truffle fries, smoked salmon sliders, meaty carnitas tacos, artisan marshmallows, or blueberry cream puffs! It could be anything. Surprises are the best part! Four restaurants. One night. Infinite fun. Start Crawling

It is quite amazing when we get something in Sacramento that is so ahead of the curve, but last night was the second Dishcrawl here.  We started off at Sugar & Spice on F Street, where Pastry Chef Carissa Jones had laid out three tasty tidbits for us to try.

They are, from bottom to top, Peach Cobbler Pie, S’mores Tarte, and a Creamsicle PannaCotta. The latter, which was served in what the Brits would call a “cunning little glass” was creamy and tart at the same time, but not at all too sweet.  The Peach Cobbler Pie, which was billed as a “hold in your hand” was amazing.  The crust was flaky and the filling was fresh.  My dress liked it too, and that was the first of the evening’s food that I would end up wearing.

Next, we went just across the street to 524 Mexican Restaurant, where we had–yep, you guessed it–tamale and quesadilla and burrito and beans and rice.  My favorite was the quesadilla: while the tortilla was somewhat limp (I think the steam tray service had something to do with that),  the meat inside was startlingly tasty.

From there, we took our already somewhat full bellies a couple of blocks away to Brew It Up.  I honestly didn’t think I’d be able to eat much, but I was reckoning without the incredible flavors of Brew It Up’s small plates.  This is the mindblowing pizza, which had some sort of cruncy bacon-y meat and–who’d a thought it–macaroni and cheese as well as white truffle oil.

Let me gush as well over the grilled asparagus with balsamic.  The asparagus was perfectly cooked–neither limp, nor crunchy–which I have never been able to do with my asparagus.

Brew It Up was the first place we could get drinks-and I would suggest that the Dishcrawl planners amend that in the future because you know, those adult beverages do grease the wheels of a social occasion.   I am woefully lax about taking notes while I’m in the throes of eating and drinking (yeah, I know…I’ve got to unlax myself in future restaurant reviews), so I can’t tell you the name of the concoction I had.  I think it was Cherry Seagrams mixed with Coke.  I feared it would taste like the cough syrup my mother used to give me, but–hey!  not at all.  It was light and refreshing, and I must find out the name so I can order it again.

But we weren’t done eating yet.  Next we walked over to Blue Prynt, which is a lovely, cool and elegant restaurant on 11th, a good place for a date I’d say.  They started us off with one of their specialty drinks, the Candied Apple Martini. Then we had a well-seasoned crab cake, followed by Chicken Cordon Bleu.  I thought how sad it would be if our only dessert was the memory of Sugar and Spice, but Blue Prynt suprised us with Baked Alaskas, which were light and airy and made me want to lick the plate.

Dishcrawl charges $26 (plus a handling fee) which covers all the food served (drinks from the bar were extra), which is a fantastic deal for all that we ate. The next one is in July, and I’ll definitely be going.

The food was amazing, and the company even better. What a great way to discover new adventures in your own backyard! For now, I’ve got a new favorite desert spot, and a couple of others that are on my shortlist when taking company out for the evening.

This was my first Dishcrawl, but it definitely won’t be my last…

The company was stupendous, George! See you in July. Maybe we can get a Discrawl in Land Park–or Elk Grove!
