Every American holiday, I celebrate with store-bought cupcakes appropriately decorated for the holiday. They come by the dozen and I buy the lot, even the holidays when I’ve been on my own. They must come from the supermarket; no poofy bakery cupcakes for me. When I lived in Elk Grove, I would buy them at Raley’s, which got exactly the perfect blend of lard and sugar in the frosting. Now that I’m in L.A., I’ve bought them at Vons and Ralphs, but none hold a patch to Raley’s. These pictured are Raley’s Fourth of July cupcakes from 2011.
