So You Think You Can Dance? – Top 12

Natalie & Musa – Hip Hop

She’s posturing.  She does a sexy act that is beginning to wear thin on me.  Nigel: Musa was in top form; Natalie didn’t have much to do and so she was acting, rather than dancing.

Ryan & Heidi – Cha Cha

Ryan has never seen the cha cha he says and Heidi feels that pressure to pull them through.  Some awkward parts – he doesn’t look comfortable  with some of the lifts – but his footwork looked really good to me – I like their energy, but I agree with Nigel that she scrunches her face up.  Maybe Botox would stop her from doing that.  What’s missing from Ryan’s performance?  Nigel mentioned it and X analyzed it: tension.  He dances with tension and he’s got to relax.  I think what he means is that Ryan is trying too hard.  Yeah, what I see when Ryan dances is the effort, not the joy.  Bottom 3

Ivan & Allison – Contemporary

He started off awkward, and her intensity and feeling showed him up.  Somewhere in the middle of the dance he just came alive.  There was a real connection between them.  And his lines, as X said, were incredible.  By the end of the dance, they were together, equally matched.  But his hair—oy,

Dimitri & Ashlee – Pop

Eh!  I hated her hair.  Sorry but I could barely get past it.  N said it was a forgettable performance. M said pop is watered down hip hop and that’s what they did. X said no, Pop is a mix of hip hop and jaz together.  X: Ashlee played the role the same throughout and Dimitri was all legs and no upper body. First he said they brought what they could to it; it wasn’t their fault (ie it was Dan’s the choreographer).  Then when Cat questioned him about that, he backed off and said he wouldn’t answer the question, that Dan did great choreography and they didn’t bring enough to it.  I think the first comment is right.  I have started to dread when Dan is the choreographer because he does these hokey little playlets that look like something a cruise ship dance team would perform.  Bottom 3

Martha & Travis – Foxtrot

Major groans from Travis.

What the hell was that?  Was there a major goof in the middle?  Mary is the Paula Abdul of this show – she loves Martha’s dress and Travis partnered her so well.  The judges all were sort of complimentary, sort of.  Not particularly enthusiastic though.  They’re not particularly watchable for me.  And I hate those lines he’s got shaved (or dyed?) on the left side of his head.  Yes, I’m obviously having a hair night.  Bottom 3

Danielle & Benji – Broadway

Benji is an amazing dancer.  Danielle was not particularly well served by the dress.  Nigel predicted that Benji would win.  I agree. His techni
