Win a Fandango certificate: July 1 take your friends to see Larry Crowne

Here’s the comforting thing about moving on in your midlife years: the stars you adored when you were young are moving on as well.  If they’re not just stars but real icons of popular culture, then they have the moxie and the means to make movies about what interests them–which is the stuff of life and midlife.

Enter Tom Hanks, who will be 55 in a couple of weeks.  With Nia Vardalos, who will be 49 in the Fall, he has written Larry Crowne, a film that is set to open at the beginning of July.  Hanks, a definite icon, has also directed the film, and he’s cast it with another icon, Julia Roberts, who is 44.

The film is a rom-com-dram (I just made that up…I think, unless Hollywood beat me to it) about two midlife people who figure that accepting your reality and settling for whatever is the mature thing to do.  Then our economic times–losing your job to downsizing; being underwater on your mortgage–throws some major roadblocks on that freeway to settling.  But those roadblocks end up being game-changers (I’m going for a record on mixed metaphors here), and–well, life should only be so good for all of us as it is for Hanks and Roberts characters.

Is this not the perfect summer movie for the midlife crowd?  The producers think so and they’re sponsoring a giveaway on MidLifeBloggers: a $50 Fandango certificate is the first prize.  You can take a crowd–or at least a couple of friends–to see Larry Crowne.  Second prize is a sure-to-be-a-collector’s-item Larry Crowne T-shirt & Notepad.

Here’s what you have to do:

  • Tell me in a comment why you should win this giveaway.  Be funny or tragic, but never dull.
  • Your comment must include a valid email address.
  • Entrants must be at least 18, but really, why are you on this site if you’re not in midlife?!
  • Entries will be accepted until 11:59 p.m on June 28, 2011.
  • Winners will be chosen from qualified entries using random.org and announced on June 29.
  • I will contact the winners by email, and Universal Pictures will be providing the prizes.  The movie opens July 1, so if we all move quickly, you can use your Fandango certificate for opening weekend (and you do know that for the movie business, opening weekend stats are the only ones that count!).

Giveaway Results

The fickle hand of fate has moved and writ large and is pointing to Stacy as our first place winner.  She will be receiving a $50 Fandango certificate from Universal Pictures.  Not quite so lucky, but still in the winner’s circle, is Little Latina, who will be receiving a Larry Crowne T-shirt and notepad.

UPDATE:  Stacy and Little Latina–I need your snail mail addresses to give to the producers.  It seems that Little Latina did not include an email address, so if I don’t hear from her by Thursday, 6/30/11 at 3:30 pm, I’ll do another drawing for that prize.

UPDATED UPDATE:  Never heard from Little Latina, so I threw all the entries back in the hopper and Margaret Smith came back the winner of the T-shirt and notepad.

I should win because I can’t wait to see this movie. Big and Pretty Woman are two of my favorite movies because I LOVE Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts! But unfortunately, the cost of movies these days is just ridiculous. I’ve seen some movies in our Dollar Theater that, quite frankly, weren’t even worth $1. If I have to wait for this movie to come out on DVD, I’ll die! OK – maybe I won’t die… but I’ll be extremely impatient, and I have enough things to be impatient over :-)!

I love any type of movie about overcoming odds, and I love that this is one funny movie.

I should win because I LOVE Tom Hanks and well—who doesn’t want to save a little cash at the movies? I mean, they are quite expensive now a days! 😉

I should win this because I am in a similar situation. Bad enough I was laid off in 1993, got a job with another company – and they laid me off in 2008 and I’m still looking for work. I am older, so that’s one strike against me. I keep toying with the idea of going back to school, or learning some new skills to make me more marketable. But then I think that if I put all that work into it, and don’t get a job, that would be even more depressing!!
So I could use a movie that shows what someone else did in a similar situation! Hopefully it has a happy ending and no animals die!
    Thanks for the giveaway!

I should win because I am currently going through life with a real living Larry Crowne, so why not enjoy him in the theater as well?
    Thanks for the chance.

From foodstamps to poverty, I’m not going to take it anymore! The cavernous economic gap is giving me the short end of the stick, and I will not accept it any longer. I haven’t even been to a simple movie in changes, and I am dying for your Blog to change that for me. After all, none of us deserve the current state of ‘reality’ – we deserve happiness.

I don’t understand why this movie is considered “Out of Mainstream”!?

When I went to community college I was definately not the after high school age. In fact I was the median being 30. There was one boy 19, and there were plenty of over 40 men.

I like this movie becuse it does show that you can still get a good career if you’re past univerity/college age. And we ALL had fun, including all the over 40’s . . . er um, esp the over 40’s.

I lost my job & have gone on the road with my husband & his work. We are clear across the country living in an RV and I’m loving every minute of it. We are in our 50’s and I’d love to see this movie to see what else I’ve been missing out on!!

I should win because my hubby is over the road for W.E.E.K.S at a time and we have three kids. If we can get the magical combination of him in town PLUS a sitter crazy (ahem, RESPONSIBLE) enough to take all our kidlets, we would SO enjoy a little time for us!

This movie sounds great. Being a midlifer (49) myself, and having lost my job a few months ago, I can relate to this movie. Also, with Tom Hank & Julie Roberts, this movie has to be wonderful. I should win because this movie sounds like it will help me look more positive at being in some simular situations. Thanks somuch.

43 hit me hard. Money problems (like everyone), divorce, and company was sold letting myself and everyone in middle management go. So I am anxious to see this movie for the obvious reason… Larry Crown looks like pages ripped from my life. Moreover I need the win because after being out of work for a while and paying attorney’s fees, I won’t get to see this until it’s on broadcast TV otherwise.

I should win because I should see some humor in a total repeat of my life. Although I had kids to go along with the downsizing, which makes things much scarier, however, we’ve finally started to dig out of the hole and we did it together! A movie would definately be a fun night out for us!

Why me? Why not. I love movies as much, if not more, than the next person. And, like many of my co-commenters I’m also reshaping and changing life in a way I never anticipated at this stage. I’m a hopeless romantic and have already made up my version of Tom and Julia falling madly in love and riding off on his little motorcycle!!!
You know where to find me!

Hi Jane, I should win this cause I’m over 50, my house is upside down, I lost my job 2.5 years ago and spent all our savings plus most of the retirement. I haven’t been to a movie in over 2 years, due to the current conditions… sigh

Oh yeah, and Julia Roberts is my all time favorite actress! You know us red heads stick together lol jk

Thanks for the opp. great fun!

  46. Barbara says:

I should win because I’m 52 and I’ve been an ‘older’ student off and on for 20 years now. Currently ‘off’ because we don’t have the money to pay for another semester because we’re paying half the tuition for our three kids’ college via loans – and my current employers are moving so I’m searching for yet another unfulfilling job to help pay the bills and keep from going further into debt. Plus I love Tom and Julia and really want to see this movie, but would have to wait for it to come to the dollar cinema if I don’t win this! (Thanks for the contest!) barbarashallue at yahoo dot com.
