The Real Cost of Denying Same Sex Marriage

Tell me that same sex marriage has any impact on heterosexual marriage, and I’ll tell you, baloney.  Tell me that the marriage part of the equation isn’t necessary because same sex unions have the same rights and privileges as heterosexuals do, and I say, hmmmmm, is that really true?

No, actually, it’s not.  Have a look at this infographic, created from a New York Times analysis of the real costs to same sex partners.

It would solve a lot of problems if the government ONLY recognized civil unions or partnerships and left “marriage” to the religious.

Thanks for this very informative post. In the UK we now have “civil partnership”, which takes care of all these financial inequalities, so here the notion of “marriage” has become an emotional one on both sides — some homosexual couples want to be able to call themselves “married” (and they can’t, technically), and some heterosexual couples who reject the institution of marriage, want to know why “civil partnership” isn’t open to them. And some spinster sisters who live together wonder why they can’t benefit from some of the financial perks of civil partnership just because they are related (and aren’t going to bed together).

The moral is, it gets very complicated when the state gets involved in who is or is not having sex — and with whom! And it has got even more complicated because the state has (as it were) got into bed with the churches to decide whether the sex (or lack of sex) is okay (= worthy of recognition = worthy of tax benefits).

I say, civil partnership for any couple who chooses and get the state out of the bedroom.

And to think, people still quote the Bible as saying it is wrong. I just don’t understand.
