Peterson sentence

so they gave him the death penalty…i’m not surprised, considering the blood thirsty crowd that viewed the verdict. i just don’t get what people think is achieved with the death penalty. certainly not saving taxpayer’s money–by the time peterson is done with his automatic appeals, we the people will have paid far more in legal fees than we would have to keep him incarcerated till he died a more-or-less natural death. and the death penalty can’t be said to be a deterrant to murder. so what is achieved? other than the mob getting to shout their blood lust.

    Some people think it’s justice, in the biblical, eye for an eye kind of way.

    And some do in fact believe that the DP’s a deterrent.

    But then, some people believe in the designated hitter, too.

    we’re certainly in the minority with our death penalty
    i have mixed feelings, but i didn’t realize that it would cost more to kill them after legal hearings.
    i think it’s worse punishment to stay alive in prison for the rest of one’s life, and have to think about such an awful crime

    Yes, I think death is the easier sentence. What concerns/disgusts/appalls me, however, is what the death penalty does to us, to We the People. The raging mob that cheered outside the courthouse yesterday–who were they? And what amazing lack in their lives prompts them to feel such self-righteous glee at the sentence? Peterson isn’t a monster. Peterson is just an amazingly f***** up narcissist. If there is such a thing as a “monster”, I reserve that for those who take pleasure in killing. Which–hey–all those people foaming at the mouth outside the courthouse–aren’t they taking pleasure in the anticipation of killing? And that’s what concerns/disgusts/appalls me–the way the death penalty makes monsters of people.
