Here’s what I’m up to as I’m getting ready to ‘heigh ho…’:

1. My taxes…It’s just me and my Turbotax this year.  I thought, since I had that big house sale, that I would hire an accountant.  And one did come to call one day several months ago.  But he made my taxes sound soooooooooo basic…and I already had (and paid for) the Turbotax.  So I’m doin’ ‘em myself.

2.  Straightening/ordering my house…as much as I can tolerate so that it is tolerably organized when I start working.

3.  Getting a work wardrobe.  It has been X years since I have had to wear anything better than jeans.  It has been X years since I fit into clothes that I formerly wore to work.  Suits, slacks, even blouses are all–sigh!–too small.  This has made my clothes search somewhat emotionally complicated.  As in, I can’t buy that; I already have 3 of them, even if they don’t fit.  I threw out all, yes all, of my long-hoarded L’eggs, etc.  Too small; too old.  And bras–I’m on a bra-buying binge.

4.  Getting my website up and going.  There’s not much there yet.  Just the barebones and a link to my LJ blog.  But it’s a start.  http://www.byjane.org

One of the best things I found about giving up legal work, because of my tinnitus, was that I didn’t have to struggle into girdle, pantyhose, skirt and blouse every morning. I never felt comfortable at work in trousers – they just weren’t what secretaries wore to law offices! I still have my old work stuff, just in case I ever need it… should get rid of it.

Over here in the UK, we can do our taxes online, and it all gets worked out for us if we do it in time. They keep fiddling with the tax system to try and make it seem fairer and as if we’re paying less, but the ‘hidden’ taxes keep creeping in. Bloody government.
