Great Interview Experiment: DaVe from FupDuckTV
I had the great and good fortune in the Great Interview Experiment of 2009 to draw DaVe’s blog, FupDuckTV. It is, without question, a great and good blog, not to mention funny and just a tad (or sometimes more) risque. The questions I set to DaVe are self-explanatory. Or if they’re not, I’ve included reference links–because I’m helpful that way.
But before we begin, just a word from our sponsor: the GIE is the brainchild of the world-famous Neilochka of Citizen of the Month, another great and good blog, not to mention overtly risque (e.g., Neil’s penis talks–to him? To others? To the world, perhaps…)–
Okay, it is now a month or so later and I cannot remember what the word from our sponsor was supposed to be. So let’s just move along to the interview. You need no more gloss than this: my gems are in black and DaVe’s pearls are in red.
A recent post on FupduckTV was called Sideboob & Underboob, in which you waxed eloquent on the relative merits of sidebook cleavage versus underboob cleavage–with illustrations. How much fun did you have selecting the photos for the Sideboob & Underboob post ? Or were they part of your permanent collection? And if so, what else is in your permanent collection?
The sideboob & underboob article is a debate that I’ve been kicking around for a while now with friends. Surprisingly finding decent photos that were not pr0n (sic) was actually fairly difficult. Regardless, I enjoyed myself writing that article. I actually don’t have a permanent collection of stock photos or pr0n for that matter. The internet is vast and ever changing. I’d rather keep everything fresh. Not to mention, I don’t want to sound creepy by having a photo collection.
Another post on FupduckTV had to do with communication styles: I’m amazed and awed–not to mention impressed–at the fullness of this post. Were you thinking this stuff for a long time and just now saw the perfect opportunity to use it? Or did you come up with the additional communication styles right now just for this post?
I actually wrote most of that article completely on the fly. I originally was going to talk about the 10 types put forth by Mr. Lee. I got about 5 minutes into writing my article and I discovered that there were tons of other forms of communication that Mr. Lee had glossed over. It was my duty to fill in his cracks (wait…. That sounds dirty).
The tagline on fupduck Tv is “Social commentary for the masses.” And what about the hoi polloi? Are the elite not worthy of your wisdom as well? And if not, why not?
Wow… you is smardisiter than me (Ms. Smartsy Pants). I had to look up what hoi polloi meant. Thank god for Wiki and their nearly right answers. The elite ARE worthy of my wisdom, but they should pay for it (isn’t that the (current) American way? Tax the hoi polloi?) In all seriousness, my writings are mainly humor and satire with a touch of wisdom thrown in… They are open to anyone to read, interpret and enjoy. I actually enjoy more when people have to think about the jokes.
DaVe –and how is that pronounced? In other words, where is the syllabic emphasis? Or is there–oh no, don’t tell me–just one syllable?
DaVe is pronounced Davey or Dave V. My name is Dave and my last name begins with V. Over the years, my friends have referred to me as DaVe to distinguish me from other friends named Dave. I don’t mine being called Davey as long as it is not proceeded by Crocket. Only one person in the world is allow to call me Crocket, my father. There is a long private story about that.
Seriously, you post a lot. And not just what-I-had-for-lunch type posts. How do you do it? Do you do anything else? Is the ‘else’ that you do somehow related to your wit and wisdom on FupDuckTV.
I’m a firm believer that my readers (passers-by and regular readers) do not want to read mindless drivel about my breakfast. They are reading my site for a reason. For this exact reason is why I hate Twitter. Who cares about tweets detailing your bowel movements?
When I write, I actually use Notepad with no spellchecking or formatting available to me. I find that I focus on what I’m saying more than how I am saying it this way. I am easily distracted by shiny objects an Notepad is a good way to avoid distractions such as punctuation and italics.
I actually do ALOT more than just writing. I do have a 9-to-5 job that has surprisingly and staggering amount of downtime. I have WAY too many hobbies to list them all. Just in regards to the internet, I am working on a screenplay for a internet based web short suspense drama, I am working to create a web-comic, and I am currently working to revive my FupDuckTV video blog. All this extra stuff influences what I write about.
How do you choose the topics for your blog posts. Do they come to you in the night? Or do you always have a FupDuck eye out for the…the–. What? What is it about aa topic that gets you going?
I keep a running list of topics that I’d like the world to know about. There is a crazy man in my head and he wants to be heard. Most of the ideas come to me while I’m driving or in the shower (I take very long showers). The tough part is getting them out of my head before I forget about them. I also have many like minded friends that bounce ideas off of me. My friends are a huge influence on the topics I come up with.
Let’s talk about your blog name. I get the FupDuck. But the TV? Where does that enter the equation?
I actually own the URL FupDuck.com as well, but keep FupDuckTV as the primary site cause that is what was released first. The shorter FupDuck.com wasn’t purchased until a year later. There are a few reasons where the TV aspect come in. If you look at my blog, you will see a category called Video Casts. My co-author and I used to do weekly video casts or video blogs. The whole concept of FupDuckTV came from my a desire to regularly hang out with my former college roommate. The video show was the excuse to get together. Over the past year, my friend’s schedule has changed and we were unable to regularly meet to do video shows. I am currently working to re-invent the video portion of FupDuckTV.com.
Okay, here’s the interesting part of the interview: you’ve been blogging for two years. Why? Or–why not?
I blog because I enjoy it. I have a regular following and I’m up to about ~8000 visitors per month. Most visitors view at least two or three pages before they leave. If I stopped blogging would anyone notice…? Maybe, but probably not enough to make a fuss or even voice a “we’ll miss you”. I’ll keep blogging until I stop enjoying it. I make time for it in my schedule and I push myself to write two to three original articles a week (except for December with is Post-a-Day December).
What question should I have asked you? What matter are you burning to settle?
I don’t know…. What are you holding back on? My burning issues are between me and my doctor and she has me on a regular dose of Penicillin now to deal with that issue. *wink*
See, we’re back to the overtly risque. These guys–they just can’t keep their parts out of the conversation.
