The Four Quadrant Movie: Secretariat

I’m just hanging a left here at Hollywood-speak.  Do you know what a Four Quadrant movie is?  Allow me, the former resident of Tinsel Town, to inform you:  A Four Quadrant movie is one that appeals to the old and the young, the male and the female.  Everybody, that is.     As opposed to the One Quadrant movie, which appeals to merely the young or only the male.  Okay, probably the real One Quadrant movie is the chickflick, because young and male seem to go together at the Eightplex, don’t they.

However, I saw a movie last night that I think may just be a four quadrant flick .  Am I dating myself using that word?  It’s just because Secretariat, the movie, takes place in the seventies.  We definitely used the word flick then…I think.  I was the honored guest of Margaret of NannyGoatsinPanties, who was the honored guest of Disney, who made the film.  We cut right through the line when we gave our bona fides to the Man In Charge.  And we didn’t have to be wanded by the security guys, like the rest of the rabble waiting at the Cinerama Dome in downtown Sacramento–  Oh, wait, it’s not in downtown Sacramento; it’s in Arden.  And it’s not the Cinerama Dome because that’s in Hollywood.  So it’s some movie theatre in Arden that looks like a couple of breasts.  My, my, how I digress.

Secretariat was only the greatest race horse that ever lived.  He won the Triple Crown.  But of course, you knew that, because you kept hearing about the Triple Crown a couple of years ago when Big Brown almost won it.  (Can you tell I love horses?  Well, I’m a girl, aren’t I, and horses are our thing!)

If you like horses too, you’ll want to see Secretariat.  It was this good:  I didn’t have any popcorn, and I was still on the edge of my seat.  In fact, I knew the beginning, middle and ending, and I was still on the edge of my seat.  That’s pretty good filmmaking.  The hero is a stallion, the heroine is a housewife with four kids and the villain is a mouthy man who gets his comeupance.   If that’s not a Four Quadrant movie, I don’t know what is.

    Jane-
    When I saw the preview on television, I was mesmerized by the storyline- now, I know I want to see it. I am not a movie-goer so this a big deal… thanks for the heads up- will tell LT there’s a quadrant for him. ;-)
    great post

    @ridgely johnson,
    The best of Southern Womanhood on display–the old steel hand in the velvet glove! The movie itself has “problems”, but I went for the horses.

    Phew, I’m so glad you liked it cuz it’s on my “must see” list. I’m a big Diane Lane fan and I remember the horse.

    You and Margaret get to do the coolest stuff :-)

    Cheers, jj

    @Joanna Jenkins,
    I had a mouthful of coffee and when I read that last sentence, I snorted it. Margaret and I USED to get to do the coolest things when we USED to live in SoCal. Hey, isn’t that where you live? Don’t you regularly see the stars on your way to the market?)

    I love horse movies, as long as they have happy endings. I really loved Seabiscuit. My grandfather was a trainer/jockey and I’m told that when I was a toddler he’d take me to the track and put me on the lead ponies. I wish I had a photo of that because I have no memory of it, but that must be where my love of horses started. I look forward to seeing Secretariat.

    And if you love good horse movies, rent “Big Spender” from Netflix. I wrote it. (Shameless plug) ;)

    @injaynesworld,
    Your grandfather was a trainer–I’m so jealous. My grandfather sold paperbags from a pushcart.
